Acrylic Partial Dentures are often the most cost effective denture and can be constructed in a shorter period of time. These dentures are generally advised when existing natural teeth have a poor prognosis or if quantity of tooth loss is significant.
Acrylic partial dentures are easily repaired, relined and modified.
The base of an acrylic partial denture is made out of (tissue-colored) plastic. Metal tooth clasps and the required denture teeth are attached to the plastic base.
It is typically considered that acrylic partials are less desirable than cast metal partial dentures (in terms of strength, durability, function and effect on the patient's natural teeth). However, they do offer the advantage that teeth can usually be added to the appliance if the patient loses additional natural teeth in the future.
The most common reasons for choosing an acrylic partial denture are due to its lower cost or that it will serve a short-term transitional purpose.
